Wedding day downpour turns out to be lucrative for two local couples Posted: 15 Jul 2010 12:39 AM PDT It's said that rain on your wedding day is good luck, and for two local couples, it was. Shawn and Christina Bryan and Gabriel and Tara Oxby received a full refund for the cost of their engagement rings from Casa D'Oro, in Cranberry, through its "Pray for Rain" promotion after the Pittsburgh area was drenched with more than one inch of rain on June 5. Christina (Bilecky) Bryan chose her wedding day with the hopes of taking photos outside under the warm spring sun. But as soon as she walked out of Saint Malachy Catholic Church, in Kennedy Township, with her husband and bridal party, the skies opened up. Plans to take pictures at the West End Overlook and Moon Park were canceled. "We had over an hour to waste, and we all kind of sat there, and it was depressing," Christina says. "I was almost in tears, then I was like 'oh, whatever, it's fine.'" The newlyweds did manage to jump out of the shuttle bus long enough to get a photo, huddled under umbrellas, near the waterfall along Campbell's Run Road, in Robinson Township, but not without a few minor casualties. "(Everything's) messy," Christina says of wading around in puddles and mud all day. "I think my shoes were pretty bad and the bottom of the dress." The following Monday, after the weekend of events quieted down and the wedding party had dried out, Shawn called Casa D'Oro to check in. "I called up there on Monday, and the salesman says 'I think you're going to be happy,'" Shawn says. Steve Wharton, a sales consultant, says he felt like Bob Barker when he gave the happy couple the good news. "That's some of the best news we can give someone: 'hey, we just bought your engagement ring,'" Wharton says. "It was a great phone call." The Pittsburgh International Airport measured 1.02 inches of rainfall during the 24-hour period — a quarter-of-an-inch of rain more than is required as part of the promotion. Reza Liaghat, president of Casa D'Oro, says in the five years of the promotion, this is the first time a couple has won, let alone two couples. Last year, Liaghat even lowered the required rainfall from one inch to three-quarters-of-an-inch to make the goal more achievable for couples. "Nobody wants it to rain on their wedding day," Liaghat says. "But, if it's going to rain, you might as well get paid for it, and have fun with it." Having fun was just what Tara (Richert) Oxby, a graduate of Shaler Area, and her husband did during their soggy wedding day. For a wedding that was planned to be held outside, Tara was glued to the 10-day forecast that she programmed to her phone. She was hopeful that the rain would hold off at their Saxonburg wedding site, but at the last minute, Tara made the final call to move the ceremony to a barn at the site. Even though the ceremony and reception were under the same roof, Tara, and her bridal party, still had to brave the rain to get there. "I had a pretty long train on my dress, unfortunately, and it was a comedic site to see me hike up my dress as far as I could and have three people with umbrellas get me onto a golf cart to get from the house to the barn," she says with a laugh. "It was a little terrifying and funny at the same time." Gabriel and Tara planned to travel back to Greensboro, N.C., the week following their wedding, but not before Casa D'Oro confirmed the good news and invited them back to the store to receive a refund check. "I think I jumped through the ceiling," Gabriel says. "It was quite a joyous occasion." Gabriel says he chose the jewelry store because of its selection of engagement rings and settings, and the "Pray for Rain" promotion was a bonus that he didn't anticipate receiving. "We weren't expecting anything," he says. "It was one of those things, that's a lot of rain, it was a good way to start off our life together and we really thank Casa D'Oro for that."
