The mystery of a stolen jewelry story diamond came to a close Saturday after a Sanford, Maine, man returned the stolen gem and turned himself in to authorities, police said.Police said that Travis Mullen, 31, returned the stolen diamond ring -- estimated at $11,199 retail -- back to the Kay Jewelers at the Fox Run Mall Saturday after family members allegedly urged him to turn himself in.Authorities said that Mullen was cooperative when he turned himself in. He is being held at Rockingham County Jail on $1,000 bail and has been charged with theft.Police said the diamond ring was swiped from a jewelry store display case Thursday afternoon, but the theft was caught on surveillance video.Investigators said the video shows a man wandering around Kay Jewelers in the Fox Run Mall in Newington. At one point, he gets the attention of one of the employees and asks to see some of the diamond engagement rings, police said."While he was being shown the rings, he snatched one and ran right out of the store without paying for it," said Lt. Scott Qualls. "It's what we would call a grab-and-run type of theft."The ring is worth more than $10,000, according to police.Police said the man ran from the store and was chased toward the parking lot by one of the employees. The employee thought the man may have gotten into an older model pickup truck, but he wasn't actually seen inside the vehicle, police said. The video shows the robber wearing a baseball cap and a stripped shirt. Police said the man is in his 20s with a thin build and had one other distinctive characteristic."By what the employee said, his front teeth were rotting, which was a distinctive mark for him," Qualls said.Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Newington Police Department at 603-431-5461.
