Couple takes alternative route

Diamond engagement rings aren't the only wedding tradition some couples are going against.

When entertainers Katy Perry and Russell Brand tied the knot in October, the pair hosted an Indian-style ceremony, complete with a Bollywood-themed party, elephants and authentic music.

Many other celebrities are know for arranging unique nuptials. Singer Ashlee Simpson and musician Pete Wentz decorated their wedding with red-and-black accents and 10,000 black roses when they married in 2008. Singer Gwen Stefani and actress Ellen Pompeo both ditched the traditional white gown for their weddings — Stefani wore a pink-and-white dress when she was married in 2002 and Pompeo wore black on her big day in 2007.

"Weddings now are very different, people are always trying to pull their personality more into the wedding," said Old Bridge resident Samantha Tuminaro, who is planning a rock concert-themed wedding on Nov. 11, 2011.

Tuminaro and her fiance, Brian Jinier of Neshanic Station, will hold their reception at Starland Ballroom, a concert hall in Sayreville, where a rock band will provide the music. The invitations will look like ticket stubs and "V.I.P passes" will serve as table cards at the reception.

"The Starland Ballroom means a lot to me. I have seen a lot of my favorite bands there,"' Tuminaro explained. "We just wanted to do something a little different."
