The pair began dating back in 2007, and split briefly in 2008, but it's thought their rocky relationship went from strength to strength after moving in together last year.

Despite this, it seems Tom's romantic proposal still took Sarah by surprise, and the star reportedly sent messages to friends, saying she was 'buzzing' with excitement about the prospect of a wedding.

'Sarah had no idea what Tom was planning,' one insider told the Sun. 'She didn't see it coming at all.'

A spokesman for the pair confirmed their engagement, but revealed a wedding date has not yet been set.

Congratulations to the happy couple!
