HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is looking for a suspect who stole an $80,000 ring from the Heritage Fine Jewelers in Pineland Station on Hilton Head Island.

On Friday, September 17 the suspect entered the jewelry store looking at engagement rings for his girlfriend. According to sheriff's deputies, the suspect seemed to know a great deal about gem stones. The suspect asked to look at a ring in the case, a 5.39 carat radiant emerald cut fancy yellow diamond surrounded by one row of white diamonds with three rows of white pave diamonds in the band itself. The stones are set in 18 karat white gold and the yellow diamond is set in 18 karat yellow gold prongs.

The jeweler turned around to get a loupe to view the stone and the suspect ran out of the store. The suspect jumped in the bed of a Dodge Ram pickup that was waiting outside the store. The truck was found abandoned nearby. The truck was reported stolen from Savannah on Wednesday, September 15.

Deputies described the suspect as a white man in his late twenties to early thirties, with short cropped dark hair, crooked front teeth, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a blue visor, blue-grey plaid or denim shorts, a striped button down shirt and glasses with retangular lenses.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Wendy Conant at 1.843.255.3424 or  Beaufort County Dispatch at 1.843.524.2777.
