LIVONIA, Mich. --

A woman cleaning the windows at her Livonia home said she suddenly came face to face with a strange man in her kitchen and reacted with the only thing she had in her hands -- a bottle of Windex.

"I turned around and I seen this guy in the kitchen and I says, 'What the heck are you doin' in here?" Eleanor Schumacker said. "I had my Windex bottle in my hand. So, I just took that and I figured I would hit him over the head or spray him."

She said she confronted the man, who then ran out.

"We were shocked and scared," said Schumacker's daughter-in-law, Cathey Schumacker. "And then, even more because I didn't get the full story until I came over here and heard that she chased him ... I was not happy about that because she could have got hurt."

Eleanor Schumacker said the man must have entered her home through an unlocked back door.

She said the man not only stole $500 from her, but also something that was worth much more to her.

"My engagement rings, 66 years ago. We'll be married 66 years this week," she said.

Livonia police said the break-in at Schumacker's home is one of many that have been reported near the Schoolcraft Road and Interstate 96 corridor.

Police said at least four homes have been broken into, with mostly cash and jewelry being stolen.

Police think the break-ins are related because the method and witness descriptions of the intruder are similar.

The intruder is described as an African-American man between 25 and 35 years old with a medium build. He has been seen driving a silver Ford Focus or Ford Taurus.
