Sapphires are a girl's new friend Posted: 17 Nov 2010 08:15 AM PST ![]() Natalie Taylor, 23, of Karana Downs, tries on an $8000 sapphire and diamond ring from Pascoe Jewellers in Ipswich's Riverlink shopping centre. David Nielsen PRINCE William's proposal to his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton after eight years with his mother's sapphire engagement ring is expected to set Ipswich ladies yearning for a blue stone of their own. The couple became engaged during a private holiday in Kenya, and William hid the ring in his rucksack for days before popping the question at a secluded spot near Mt Kenya. Instead of splashing out on a pricy rock during Britain's current economic stagnation, William offered Kate Lady Diana's 18-carat blue sapphire ring, and the wedding is planned for mid next year. Pascoe Jewellers manager Di Kibbler said sapphire and other coloured-stone engagement rings had dipped in popularity, but she expected to see a huge influx of people requesting them in the coming months. "It will probably happen soon," Mrs Kibbler said. "We had one lady come in who wanted 'Lady Di's ring' some time ago, so we think they will probably become popular again. "Most people have been choosing diamond engagement rings recently, but it's a very personal thing." Mrs Kibbler said it was difficult to guess how much Kate's ring would be worth, but sapphire engagement rings could range in price from $3500 to $10,000. Karana Downs resident Natalie Taylor knew the exact cut and style of engagement ring she wanted when her boyfriend popped the question – a diamond square cut. But after admiring a gorgeous $8000 sapphire and diamond ring, reminiscent of Kate's stunner, at Pascoe Jewellers at Riverlink yesterday, the 23-year-old said she could be swayed to coloured-stone engagement rings. "That's a very pretty ring," Mrs Taylor said. She thought it was romantic Princess William had proposed to his girlfriend with his mother's engagement ring.
