MISSOULA - For Missoula jewelers Christmas is the biggest time of year, but they say Valentine's Day is the most romantic, and right now engagement rings are flying off the shelves.

"If he didn't get an engagement ring bought at Christmas, Valentines Day is a great time to do that so we've had a fair amount of traffic and several diamond engagement ring sales already this week," says Barney Jette co-owner Nancy Ball.

"Well, it's interesting how it's changed through the years, there used to be a lot of smaller gifts, earrings, pendants, things like that, now we're doing a ton of engagement rings for Valentine's Day that seems to be the item of choice anymore, it's an engagement," Adair Jewelers Owner Jim Adair said.

Valentine's Day is a time for some men to get up the courage to say three little words, while others prepare to say four big words, "Will you Marry me?"

"With the guy who is not engaged yet, he's got to go for the engagement ring first, and that's a major purchase," says Jim Adair.

"Meeting these young men who are buying their first engagement rings they are, other than their car or their truck, they're spending the most money they've probably ever spent, so it's exciting for them and it's exciting for us as well, watching them," said Nancy Ball.

Jewelers say during the year, many times women come with to help pick to perfect ring. But on Valentine's Day, it's all up to the guy.

"Our biggest seller by far is the beautiful diamond solitaire, that is what the best is for Valentine's Day, because a guy doesn't have to worry about she likes this style or that, no just got this beautiful diamond in a box and he pops the question and you're good to go," Adair told us.

"Because we design all of our own jewelry we are able to work with a lot of the men to stay within their budget, she gets what she wants and his pocket book doesn't suffer too much," Ball said.

And for those who have already proposed, jewelry is still a popular gift.

"If he's not buying an engagement ring, there are other alternatives, ruby earrings and diamond earrings are always a slam dunk," said Ball.

"It's the whole romance, it's Valentine's Day, I mean what more can you say," Adair commented.
